Istanbul Galata University Turkish Language Teaching Application and Research Centre (GalaTAM TÖMER) Regarding the Turkish Language Exemption Exam
The first session of the exemption exam will be held on Thursday, 18 September 2025, at 10:00 a.m. in classrooms B0001-B201-B202-B301 as a written exam. Students who pass this exam will be eligible to take the oral exam in the afternoon.
Students must obtain a total of 70 points across four skills to be exempted from the preparatory class. If they score less than 15 out of 25 in any one of the skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), they will be required to attend the preparatory class.
Students who wish to attend the preparatory class directly do not need to take the exam.
The exam will be completed in four (4) sessions.
Each group will have a “GROUP LEADER” and a “GROUP SUPERVISOR”. Talking to the group leader and group supervisor is strictly prohibited.
Students who fail to achieve the 70-point threshold will be considered failed in the examination. These students will attend/continue to attend the preparatory class for one year. Students who do not participate in any of the examinations cannot be exempted from the preparatory examination.
The speaking examination consists of a 10-minute question-and-answer session with teaching staff. The question-and-answer section will assess speaking skills at the B2 level.
Detailed information regarding the speaking exam will be announced after the written exam.
ID/passport checks will be conducted before both exams begin. Students without ID or passports will not be admitted to the exam under any circumstances.
The use of devices (mobile phones, tablets, smart watches, any type of headphones, etc.) is strictly prohibited during the exam. Before the exam, students must hand over any such devices to the exam invigilator.
Leaving the room during the exam is strictly prohibited.
The exam may be cancelled by the Group Supervisor in the event of any violation of the rules or in suspicious circumstances. In cases of cheating, attempted cheating, or someone else taking the exam in place of the student, the relevant student's exam will be cancelled and proceedings will be carried out in accordance with Article 54 of Higher Education Law No. 2547.
The grading system will be as follows: writing exam 25%, grammar exam 25%, reading exam 25%, and listening and speaking exams combined 25%.
The exam will consist of fill-in-the-blank, true/false, short and long answer questions, and sequencing questions. Exam results will be announced on our University's notice board within one week.
As the exam is designed to assess your Turkish language skills, its duration may vary depending on the number of participants.
Please remember to bring the necessary materials with you, such as a pencil, eraser and sharpener. If you have any questions, please send an email to tomer@galata.edu.tr.
Each student may only take the exam once.
Those who take the exam are deemed to have accepted the above rules.
